VW How To Change The Oil On A VW Camper Engine Video Tutorial. In this helpful video and VW campervan expert talks you through the process on how to change the oil on an air cooled VW Campervan. Firstly did you realise that the oil in a vw camper engine not only lubricates the pistons and main bearings but it also performs a lot of the engine cooling function. despite it being referred to as an air cooled VW engine it is in fact the oil that plays a major part in this cooling function and is a vital part of the engine system.

Now the bad news, did you realise you should do this oil change every 3000 miles or at least twice a year even if you only use your VW Campervan for low mileage.!! So what tools do you need for the task. The video shows you need hammer mole grips and pliers, a flat blade screw driver ratchet extension for your ratchet spanner, universal socket joint and the correct size socket. You will then need a couple of replacement paper gaskets, an oil strainer/filter, an oil drainage container, an oil filler bottle, grease for the hew gaskets and oil itself - they use SAE 30.

The video goes on to show you the location of the sump plate. He locates the drainage container BEFORE loosening any nuts (watch out for the Duck!). One tip is to warm the engine first as this will thin the oil and allow it to drain a lot quicker. he recommends loosening the nuts very gently first and note he is wearing protective glasses. he makes a good point on checking the oil on the dip stick to see if it is translucent, if it is like black treacle the oil is well overdue a change.

If you VW Campervan engine does not have a  sump plate with the magnetic plug in it he recommends you order yourself one as this will make the job a lot easier next time. Another handy tip is not to do the job on a windy day outside and you can clearly see why from the video. Note the horrendous state of the oil! You should also check for shiny slivers of metal to detect if your big ends are going.  he then carefully removes the filter / strainer. Next carefully remove the paper gasket from the engine case.

Remember to use your local council facility for safe disposal of the oil. Part 2 can be viewed here
